In June and July 2008, eight workers were killed in four shipyard accidents. Amidst the sobering news, the lesson is clear - complacency can easily undo the safety and health improvements of the marine industry built over the past 10 years.
All of the accidents involve areas of work that are not new to the industry. Such accidents have happened before and the safety measures needed to protect workers are also not new. It is important that all of the stakeholders at different levels understand what must be done to keep workers safe at work.
Besides the commitment of top management and the expertise of safety professionals, the supervisors and workers must also do their part.
We need every single person at work to live the mantra “Safety starts with me”. By believing and acting on this, we will then be able to create a strong safety culture at every
workplace and keep everyone safe at work.
NTUC, in collaboration with the WSH Council, is organising a ”Workplace Safety and Health Forum - for the Shipbuilding and Marine Sector” on 25 August 2008, Monday at the NTUC Centre Auditorium.
We strongly encourage all Union Leaders, Supervisors, Workers, Safety Personnel, Management Representatives and Shipyard Owners to attend. Use this seminar as a
platform to draw from the Council’s expertise and experience in the area of WSH.
Join us on this continuous journey to keep workplaces safe.
