NTUC Family Reveals Employee Age Profile to Encourage More Companies to Adopt Age-Friendly Employment Practices
In 2007, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) family disclosed its employee age profile on its website, to show its commitment towards age-friendly employment practices (Please see ANNEX for the organisations listed under the NTUC family). This was in support of NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say’s call for companies in Singapore to disclose their workforce’s age profile on their websites to demonstrate their commitment towards age-friendly employment practices. In doing so, NTUC was able to give greater transparency on its employment practices.

Two years on, the Labour Movement’s (LM) commitment towards age-friendly employment practices remains the same. As at 1 August 2009, the NTUC family has a total of 11,906 employees, up 13% from the previous year. About 60% of the NTUC family workforce is above 40 years old, with the median-range age between 40-44 years old. NTUC has 609 employees who are aged 60 and above (See chart below).

Apart from being age-friendly, NTUC has adopted other employment practices during the current downturn. This included a commitment to strive for zero retrenchment, where NTUC will focus on being worker-centric in doing all they can to save their staff’s jobs by cutting costs. NTUC will proactively re-skill, up-skill and multi-skill its workforce in an effort to prepare them for the upturn. NTUC intends to send about 70% of its staff for training, in particular service excellence. NTUC also adopts a ‘locals first’ hiring approach, with all things being equal. In fact, about 95% of NTUC’s current workforce are local.

In summary, NTUC will continue to advocate employee-friendly practices to help workers stay competitive and remain employable for life; to enhance the social status and well-being of workers; and to build a strong, responsible and caring Labour Movement.
