Objective of Young NTUC

To ensure continuity, and to remain dynamic and resilient, the labour movement must have a strong cohort of young leaders and activists. To attract younger workers into the labour movement, NTUC and its affiliated unions recognise that we have to enliven our youthful image. Thus, the “Young NTUC” was formed with the following objectives:

- to enliven and project a more vibrant, energetic and modern image of youth in NTUC in order to draw more young people into the labour movement;

- to have a common identity that young people can associate with amongst the youth in NTUC; and to synergise and network with unions and unions’ youth chapters to organise activities of the youth, by the youth and for the youth.

Younger Workers, Higher Aspirations

Increasingly, NTUC is seeing a steady stream of young workers with higher aspirations joining its affiliated unions, as more of them join the workforce each year. For NTUC to remain relevant and representative of our workforce, it is critical for NTUC and affiliated unions to continue attracting young workers as union members, to better understand and appreciate their needs, concerns and aspirations, and to be their voice.

- With a base of about 150,000 young members, Young NTUC is, by far, the largest youth movement in Singapore, as compared to the Young PAP or People’s Association’s Youth Movement. Thus, the formation of the Young NTUC is a natural development for the labour movement, as NTUC and affiliated unions need to dovetail their efforts in serving the growing number, interests, and aspirations of younger workers

- The Young NTUC will enable younger members and unionists to participate and be involved actively in the various levels and activities of the labour movement. They can expect to share their ideas, views and concerns with their peers, and with the senior leaders of NTUC and affiliated unions. It is this continuing relationship that will ensure the future of the labour movement.
