The Labour Movement’s Workplan Seminar on 6 December this year was different, and forward-looking.

Moving away from sharing targets in figures and numbers for the year ahead, NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say charted out the Labour Movement’s direction in the years leading to 2020.

Tripartite partners expressed their support the way forward, working together with the Labour Movement in the upcoming years’ journey.

Here is a quick look at some of the comments from the Workplan Seminar floor.

“As we work towards transforming the future for more job opportunities, higher wages and better careers, it is important that there must be a change in mindset among service buyers, service providers and service workers. Tripartite partners at all levels must work closely together in making breakthroughs to improve workers’ lives.” NTUC Unit for Contract and Casual Workers (UCCW) Director Zainal Sapari

“SG has given us a very good foresight into the future. We are now targeting at unionising one in every three workers. In a lot of countries, the unionisation rate is dropping, whereas in Singapore it has always been growing. If we don’t do anything for the future, this growth may be stagnant. We, as union leaders, will constantly value every member, as well as every job, every investment and every worker.” United Workers of Electronic and Electrical Industries (UWEEI) President Francis Lim

“The NTUC’s workplan will be a catalyst to transform and grow our economy in Singapore all the way to 2020and beyond. This brings hope for our fellow workers to have a better quality life. This workplan is about our uniquely Singapore journey towards a better economy, better jobs, better pay and better lives for workers and Singaporeans.” Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) Executive Secretary Mary
