Employers in the Marine and Offshore Energy (M&OE) sector must work with NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) to transform their companies as the industry transitions towards cleaner energy and more sustainable practices, urged e2i CEO Caryn Lim.
Ms Lim spoke at this year’s Marine Week launch on 17 October 2023 at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability.
She shared that the M&OE sector’s first-ever Capability Building Roadmap (CBR) can help companies identify emerging skills and the training solutions needed to meet the future demands of the Offshore Clean Energy industry.
Coupled with NTUC’s Company Training Committee (CTC) initiative and the $100 million from the Government to scale up CTCs, she believes that this relationship can help companies successfully transform.
“In essence, the CTC, the CTC Grant and the CBR offer a holistic package for companies seeking to achieve business and workforce transformation. This facilitates better alignment and increases the chances of successful transformation,” she said.
The key message of the three-day event, conducted by e2i and ASMI, is that the M&OE sector must work together as the world responds to climate change.
e2i and ASMI believe that for Singapore to remain a global hub, companies must adapt and transform as the world shifts towards sustainable and clean energy alternatives.
The event also held its first management dialogue, themed “How to Stay Future Ready?”. The panellists included NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng, Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) President Simon Kuik, Dyna-Mac Holdings CEO Lim Ah Cheng and Strategic Marine General Manager Ryan Seah.
During the dialogue, Mr Ng emphasised NTUC’s focus on supporting workforce training and business transformation to bolster the developments of the M&OE sector.
He said: “With emerging growth areas for businesses and new jobs for workers, it’s crucial that they are prepared to seize the opportunities. Thus, we want to help our businesses transform and remain competitive, and our workers train to narrow their skills gap.”
Meanwhile, the employer partners on the panel gave their accounts on the need for employers to take charge and drive transformation in their own companies.
To attract more individuals into the sector, e2i, ASMI, and NTUC’s Electronics, Marine and Engineering (EME) Cluster are taking a joint approach to attract new talent and carrier switchers.
Beyond working with institutes of higher learning, e2i, ASMI and NTUC’s EME Cluster are also organising youth-centric programmes such as a Youth Mentorship Programme and the upcoming Marine and Offshore Job Fair on 19 October 2023 at Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability Hall 1.
These programmes provide opportunities for individuals exploring or growing within the M&OE sector.
