Mr Ngiam Kim Seng worked as a graphic plate maker for 17 years before he was retrenched due to company restructuring. He was only able to secure part time jobs due to his age and qualifications. He also took up a forklift driving license in midst of his part time jobs. Kim Seng’s opportunity came when he chanced upon a newspaper article on the job vacancy for landscape technician in March 07. He decided to try his luck and attended a Job Preparation Exercise organized by NTUC for Landscape Technician. His willingness to attempt a new career switch successfully landed him a Landscape Technician job earning a monthly salary with Toh Eng Hock Construction Pte Ltd. Kim Seng attended another Job Preparation Exercise at e2i to explore other career options in April 08. He went for the 8-days Screen-Train-Place-Train (STPT) program to enhance his pre-employability skills. During the STPT trainings, he learnt various employability skills such as communications and relationship management, stress and time management, and interview handling skills. Upon completion of the STPT trainings, and with his forklift driving license, Kim Seng was successfully employed as a Forklift Driver by CG Integrated Logistics. Kim Seng is a mature worker who is not daunted by fear of career switch or lower salary when seeking employment. He is constantly seeking new career opportunities to remain in the workforce. Kim Seng intends to pursue IT skills training so as to perform more effectively in his job which require him to update warehouse system/database. |
